Before touching a dashboard or a single metric, run this 15-minute checklist first. It solves roughly 80% of underperforming ad problems without any overanalyzing.
1. Is the offer clear and compelling?
Ask honestly: would this offer make you stop scrolling if you didn’t already know the brand? If the value proposition is vague or generic, no amount of great creative will save it. Fix it by highlighting the actual transformation — what changes after someone buys — using real numbers (“save 30%,” “delivered in 24 hours”), and making the benefit feel instant and desirable rather than abstract.
2. Is the hook strong enough to stop the scroll?
The hook is the only thing standing between someone scrolling past and someone actually pausing. Check the headline on image ads, the opening three seconds on video, and the first sentence on copy — a weak hook shows up as low CTR, low engagement, and no conversions no matter what comes after it.
3. Does the creative format actually fit the platform?
What works in Stories can flop in Feed, and what works on Facebook can miss on Instagram. Each platform rewards a different format — check the aspect ratio (4:5 for feed, 9:16 for Stories and Reels), the pacing and style (fast cuts for Stories, slower storytelling for feed), and sound usage (many watch Stories with sound on, feed with sound off). Creative that doesn’t match its format won’t deliver efficiently, no matter how good it is on its own.
4. Is the CTA specific and low-friction?
A good CTA is easy to understand, easy to act on, and matched to where the viewer actually is in their decision. “Learn More” is vague and does little. “Try for Free,” “See Customer Results,” or “Shop Limited Drop” all give a specific next step. A CTA that’s too vague gets no click; one that’s too aggressive gets a bounce — the right ask depends on the buyer’s actual stage of awareness.
Don’t overcomplicate it
Before blaming the algorithm, pausing a campaign, or overhauling the whole funnel, run this checklist first: clear offer, strong hook, platform-fit creative, low-friction CTA. Most performance issues get resolved right here, in under 15 minutes. If it’s still not working after all four check out, that’s the signal to move to deeper diagnostics.
